Dharamshala: Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (DRPGMC ) at Tanda has entered into a partnership with the National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NITRD), Chennai for a Research project titled “Sentinel Surveillance for measuring the TB Burden and trends in High Risk Group for TB”.
Dr Bhanu Awasthi Principal, Dr.RPGMC Tanda said that The National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (NITRD), an important part of the healthcare landscape of the Nation is at the forefront of research related to tuberculosis and other lung diseases. The Institute has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence by the WHO under its Tuberculosis Supranational Reference Laboratory Network.
“It is indeed an honour for Our institution to team up with NITRD in tuberculosis research. it is only apt that our institution takes up the fight against tuberculosis since this medical college started its long journey back as TB sanatorium in the 1950’s,” said Prof. Bhanu Awasthi.
Tanda Medical College has been chosen as one of the 6 sites across the country for this project to be funded by the Global Fund. The project objective will be to describe the epidemiology of Tuberculosis disease in selected clinically vulnerable population attending tertiary care hospitals in India. It will also estimate the burden of TB in high risk groups/vulnerable population using an appropriate algorithm. The data collected would be utilised to signal trends, identify outbreaks and monitor the burden of disease in the community, providing a rapid, economical alternative to other surveillance methods. Himachal Pradesh was recently adjudged the third best state after Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh in TB elimination in 50 Lakh-plus population categories and has committed to eliminate TB by 2021 ahead of the national target of 2025.
