Chandigarh, November 14, 2024: “During the COVID, government & private sector worked closely and the learning of COVID has changed the way of functioning and now both sectors are working closely”, said Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), Dr Rajiv Singh Raghuvanshi at Panjab University (PU), here today. 

Dr Raghuvanshi was delivering the prestigious Panjab University Pharmaceutical Science (PUPS) oration, at PU Law Auditorium.  He is the head of Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), which is India's premier regulatory authority for pharmaceuticals and medical devices supplying more than 200 countries and 25 percent of generics of UK. 

In his lecture, Dr Rahuvanshi shared the latest advancements, challenges, and the evolving regulatory landscape of the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors in India. The oration focused on the role of the DCGI and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in advancing public health through enhanced regulations, streamlined processes, and alignment with global standards. He highlighted the ongoing reforms and modernisation within CDSCO to create a more robust framework that encourages research, supports new drug development, and prioritizes patient safety. 

Recognising the need to flip from volume to value so as to hit a trade value of 130 billion US dollars by 2030, Dr Raghuvanshi reiterated pharmaceutical companies and research institutions to prioritise innovation. The DCGI reaffirmed India’s commitment to global public health.

In his closing remarks, the DCGI  encouraged the budding pharmacists to come up with more entrepreneurship and start up ideas for continued and progressive growth of India. He emphasised on ethics and quality as the focal point of work.

PU Vice Chancellor Professor Renu Vig emphasised Pharmacy as a noble profession that lies at the intersection of science and service, innovation, and public welfare. 

Earlier, the chairperson of organiser department, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Professor Anil Kumar extended a warm welcome.
