Efforts Underway to Ensure Justice for All, Including the Innocent

Dharamshala, March 24, 2025: Vishav Chakshu, Advocate and Media Advisor of the Kangra Bar Association, has called upon the state government and its representatives to intensify efforts in eradicating all forms of drugs, including Chitta. He emphasized the need for strict action against major drug syndicates and kingpins, while also urging leaders to work at the grassroots level to combat drug abuse. He said that the  District Kangra Bar Association and all its advocates have pledged their full support to the government in this endeavor.

However, the legal fraternity has expressed strong objections to a recent statement made by Planning Board Vice President and Fatehpur MLA Bhawani Singh Pathania in the legislative assembly. The MLA reportedly remarked that lawyers in many  courts primarily work to free those accused of Chitta-related offenses.

Responding to this, Advocate Vishav Chakshu asserted that while the fight against Chitta and other drugs is crucial, making generalized remarks about the legal profession is unwarranted. He clarified that under The Advocates Act, 1961, lawyers are duty-bound to represent individuals across all legal matters, as per Indian law. This act governs the legal profession in India and outlines the rights, duties, and ethical conduct of advocates, establishing the Bar Council of India and State Bar Councils. Section 30 of the Act grants lawyers enrolled with the State Bar Council the right to practice law in any court or tribunal across the country.

Chakshu further emphasized that lawyers are an esteemed section of society and play a pivotal role in delivering justice. "Every individual, including those wrongfully accused due to conspiracy or misunderstanding, has the right to a fair trial. Advocates not only defend the accused but also assist in ensuring that those guilty of crimes, including drug trafficking, are brought to justice," he said.

He also posed a thought-provoking question, "If an innocent person is falsely implicated in a Chitta-related case, will any political leader step forward to defend them?" His remarks underline the essential role of advocates in upholding justice and ensuring that legal representation remains a fundamental right for all.
