PROJECT TO SAVE RS.26 CRORE ANNUALLY: MAYOR BALKAR SINGH SANDHU

Ludhiana, January 24, 2019: In a move towards a cleaner, greener, Lucent and efficient lighting solution in Ludhiana, its all old street lights are set to be replaced by LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights in the city by May this year. The work on this project is going on in full swing and the LED lights have already been installed in different areas of the city.

Ludhiana Mayor Mr Balkar Singh Sandhu informed that at present, the civic body’s electricity bill for existing streetlights is around Rs 3 crore per month, which would remain only Rs 85 lakh per month. He said that against an expenditure of around Rs 36 crore annually on electricity and maintenance of existing streetlights, the civic body would save around Rs 26 crore annually as this expenditure would be around Rs 10 crore per annum.

This project was formally launched in Ludhiana city by Punjab Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister Mr Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Member of Parliament Mr Ravneet Singh Bittu and Mayor Mr Balkar Singh Sandhu on November 6, 2018.

Mayor Mr Sandhu informed that the primary objective of this project is replacement/retrofit of existing street lighting luminaries and related infrastructure with energy efficient LED based street lighting luminaries.

He stated that the project will be implemented in a shared savings model under which the Energy Service Company (ESCO) will make their own investment, implement and operate the project for contract duration of around 8 years, including the installation period. The proportion of energy saving sharing (monetary value of savings) between ESCO and the Municipal Corporation Ludhiana would be 85:15.

He further said that the implementation of this project would not only improve the service levels of street lighting in city but would also provide financial benefits to the civic body. Mayor Mr Balkar Singh Sandhu informed that the project would include replacement of existing luminaries with LED luminaries and installation of Centralised Control & Monitoring System (CCMS) and operation and maintenance of the installed luminaries and the CCMS.

Mr Sandhu said that this project would have many other social benefits such as reduced accidents and traffic hazards, enhanced safety of residents during early morning and late night hours.
