“Everyone deserves love is the sentiment that drives the story,” says Aastha Sharma from COLORS’ 'Neerja... Ek Nayi Pehchaan’

COLORS presents 'Neerja... Ek Nayi Pehchaan' a captivating family drama that shows the lengths Protima, a mother will go to secure her daughter, Neerja’s future while residing in Kolkata's infamous red-light district, Sonagachi. As she comes of age, sparks of love fly between her and Abeer, a scion of a reputed family. This bond is opposed by Didun, the madam of Sonagachi, Bijoy, Abeer’s father and Shubhra, Abeer’s paternal aunt. What remains to be seen is if a life of dignity and love is on the cards for Neerja.

 

The talented actor Aastha Sharma will be seen essaying the titular role of Neerja. Produced by Sudhir Sharma’s Sunshine Productions, ‘Neerja… Ek Nayi Pehchaan’ will air on the 10th of July 2023 and thereafter every Monday to Sunday at 8:30 pm only on COLORS.

 

 

1.       Tell us something about the show.

A.     'Neerja... Ek Nayi Pehchaan' portrays a touching story that revolves around a mother's unwavering love for her daughter, Neerja. Despite the challenging circumstances of growing up in Sonagachi, Kolkata's red-light district, Neerja is shielded from the dangers and biases of society by her mother. The show beautifully captures the struggles and sacrifices that a mother endures to ensure a better future for her daughter, overcoming the obstacles associated with living in re-light area. On the other hand, Abeer, who comes from an affluent neighborhood, has enjoyed a privileged upbringing, but his destiny takes an unexpected turn. Neerja is portrayed as innocent and lovable, while Abeer embodies righteousness and hard work. The interesting narrative of the show unfolds as Neerja and Abeer's paths intertwine, showcasing the convergence of their lives.

 

2.      Tell us about your character in the show.

A.      Neerja possesses a captivating beauty, coupled with a humble and pure-hearted nature. She wants to secure a life of dignity for herself and her mother, away from the clutches of Didun, the madam of Sonagachi. She has to face a lot of prejudice as she belongs to an ill-famed place, but she is ready to overcome any number of challenges with her never-give-up attitude. She finds solace in the realms of soulful poetry, music and intellectual pursuits. She is a contemplative soul, a quick learner, and adaptive, yet also vulnerable.

 

3.      Why did you say yes to the show and the character? 

A.      I chose to be part of this show for several reasons. Firstly, the character of Neerja intrigued me. Neerja's character demanded emotional depth, vulnerability, and resilience, which is a rewarding challenge for me as an actor. I saw this as a chance to explore my skills, push my boundaries, and evolve as an artist. I am grateful to bring Neerja’s story to life. Everyone deserves love is the sentiment that drives the story.

 

4.      How did you prepare for the role of Neerja who comes from a place like Sonagachi? 

A.      I studied the performances of actors who have previously essayed similar roles, seeking inspiration from their nuanced interpretations, and devoted considerable time to thoroughly reading the script repeatedly. To ensure authenticity on screen, I sought the guidance and expertise of the show’s creative team. Their valuable insights and inputs helped me shape Neerja’s portrayal and make her character come to life.

 

5.      Did you encounter any difficulties while playing Neerja? 

A.      This is a challenging character to embody because of its background. The story demands to be dealt with sensitivity and I had to adopt the same approach for the portrayal of my character. I was very mindful of the fact that my embodiment of Neerja must make the audience empathise with her.  Other than this, there were no challenges as such because she is just like any daughter one must have seen.

 

6.      How has playing the role of the daughter in this show impacted you personally?

A.      Playing the role of the daughter in this show has had a profound personal impact on me. It has shown me the complexities and depths of the mother-daughter relationship, and it has deepened my understanding of the incredible bond. Through Neerja's journey, I have gained a greater appreciation for the sacrifices and unconditional love that mothers bestow upon their children. It has made me reflect on my own relationship with my mother and the invaluable role she plays in my life. Portraying Neerja has instilled in me a sense of gratitude and a heightened sense of empathy toward the struggles and aspirations of daughters everywhere. This role has truly been a transformative experience that has touched my heart and will stay with me long after the show concludes.

 

7.      How does it feel to be associated with COLORS’ Neerja… Ek Nayi Pehchaan as a lead actor?

A.      Previously, I had the opportunity to work with COLORS in a smaller episodic role. But now I’m grateful to be associated with COLORS again and to have the platform to portray such a compelling character.

 

8.      What is your bond with your co-actors? 

A.      Working with exceptional actors is an invaluable opportunity to observe their approach. My co-actors have truly made the journey of bringing this remarkable show to life unforgettable. Sneha Wagh, portraying the role of Protima, has become another mother figure to me, and Rajveer, who plays Abeer, has become a dear friend. Additionally, working alongside the phenomenal Kamya Panjabi, Ayub Khan and Vibha Chibber has been an absolute privilege, as their expertise and creativity are truly unparalleled.

 

9.      What message would you like the viewers to take away from this show regarding the depth and significance of a mother's love?

A.      My message to the viewers of this show is that everyone deserves love, respect, and a chance to build a better future, regardless of their background or circumstances. I hope the viewers recognize and appreciate the immense impact that a mother's love has on shaping the lives of their children.
