Ludhiana, March 6, 2024: Dr Christine Moliner, Associate Professor and Head, Centre for Migration and Mobility Studies, OP Jindal Global University, Sonipat, delivered a guest lecture on “Seeking Greener Pastures: Punjabi Culture of Migration and the Recent Feminisation of Migration to Canada” in the Department of Economics and Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), today.
Dr Moliner focused on the research undertaken by her on the impact of migration on the country of origin, and also on the migration and development nexus, which has recently emerged as a key area both in research and policy making. There has been shifts in the perception of migration-development link from initially positive to negative (with the notion of brain drain and structural dependency) to positive gain (with remittances, poverty reduction, diaspora philanthropy and transnational entrepreneurs), she observed. So, the dominant narrative as revealed by her was about migration as a tool of development, progress and modernity. She also emphasized on the latest trend of migration with more focus on female migration particularly from Punjab.
At the outset, Dr JM Singh, Head of the Department, gave a brief introduction of Dr Moliner and discussed her area of research.
Dr Shalini Sharma and Dr Gaganpreet Kaur welcomed the speaker with a bouquet.
Later, Dr Atinder Pal Kaur proposed a vote of thanks.
