Females To Run E-Rickshaws In Ludhiana

Ludhiana, April 6, 2016: For empowering the women and girls of the city as well as thinking about their safety, the District Administration would very soon start "E-Rickshaw" service for the women/girls in the city. These e-rickshaws would be run in collaboration with the Hero Group and would be by the women and for the women.
In the first phase 10 such e-rickshaws have been arranged, that would start plying on the city roads in coming few days.
While providing information, Deputy Commissioner Mr Ravi Bhagat and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Miss Apneet Riyait informed that initially these e-rickshaws would ply on selected routes within the city. They said that the routes would be chosen on the basis of areas which are frequented by women more. They said that daily a large number of women use public transport for visiting their offices, educational institutions and other places. That is why, the district administration has now decided to recruit female drivers so that the women/girls feel safe while travelling in them. These e-rickshaws would be registered with the District Transport Office.
They further informed that another aim of starting these e-rickshaws is to empower women so that they start earning. They said that Maruti Suzuki has agreed to train these drivers. They have appealed to the interested candidates to come forward and join this initiative. For applying, the candidates should be atleast 18 years of age and should have a valid driving license. They said that once this initiative starts running successfully, more e-rickshaws and more drivers would be recruited. They said later if any female does not have a driving license, the district administration would get it made after her thorough training.
The interested girls/women can apply with the office of either Deputy Commissioner or Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) on any working day at the earliest. The candidates fulfilling all criteria would be selected as per merit.
