Dharamshala, February 7, 2019: In a major first, the first balloon Kyphoplasty of Himachal Pradesh was conducted by the department of Neurosurgery of Dr R P Government Medical College, Tanda on 2nd February 2019. This was stated by Dr.Bhanu Awasthi, Principal. Dr.RP Government Medical College, Tanda. Dr.Awasthi while congratulating Dr.Amit Joshi, the Head of the department of the department of neurosurgery said, “It is a matter of pride for Dr R P Government Medical College to become the first institution in the state to begin this procedure.”

Dr.Awasthi added, “Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive spine procedure used for treatment of compression fractures of spine in which bone cement is injected into fractured vertebra after restoring the height of vertebra using inflatable balloons using just two incisions of 5mm. The procedure was performed on a patient who had presented with fall from tree with compression Fracture of Twelfth thoracic vertebra (backbone) which was causing focal kyphosis (humpback).”

The patient was discharged on 6th February.

Dr. Awasthi further added that initiative such as these not only motivate the faculty members in delivering their best, but also act as source of inspiration to future medical professionals.
