Five-day Annual Production Theatre Festival concludes
The Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, Chandigarh has concluded its five days Annual Production Theatre Festival with the shows of play “Sohni Mahiwal” written by Ekam Maanuke. The play is Designed and Directed by Dr. Navdeep Kaur, Chairperson, Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, Chandigarh. This year’s Annual Production is dedicated in the memory of Padma Shri Prof. Balwant Gargi, founder Director of the Department.
Chandigarh, May 31, 2024: The Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, Chandigarh has concluded its five days Annual Production Theatre Festival with the shows of play “Sohni Mahiwal” written by Ekam Maanuke. The play is Designed and Directed by Dr. Navdeep Kaur, Chairperson, Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, Chandigarh. This year’s Annual Production is dedicated in the memory of Padma Shri Prof. Balwant Gargi, founder Director of the Department.
Hargunjit Kaur, Secretary Tourism, Chandigarh Administration and KPS Mahi, PCS (Retd.) former ADC, Jt. Secrtary Home Chandigarh Administration were present among the special guests for the concluding show.
All five shows got an overwhelming response from the audience and were house packed. The concluding show too got standing ovation from the audience along with a request for more shows. The department will announce further dates for the shows soon on the high demand from the audience.
Sohni Mahiwal is one of the most prominent poetic legend of Punjab and Sindh. It is a story of love and sacrifice, the script along with the story is woven with songs and qalaams by sufi poets Fazal Shah, Hashim Shah, Bulle Shah etc. The performance was in Punjabi language and designed to give a total theatre experience.
Dr. Navdeep Kaur, the Director of the Play mentioned that it is an excellent experience to explore our roots and traditions with the young generation. All the students of MA-I & MA-II have participated in the production. Dr. Navdeep Kaur further mentioned that it is a challenge to prepare this two hours production with 40 students and that too when maximum students are not from Punjab region but with the day and night hard work for 45 days, it becomes possible.
The audience praised the Design, Direction and Live Music of the play. Dr. Tejinder Singh has done the live music of the play along with the lead singing which is the life line of the play and the lighting of the play is designed by Sh. Avtar Singh Sahni.
