Flash Mob for International Childhood Cancer Awareness month
Ludhiana, September 20, 2021: September is observed nowadays as the International Childhood Cancer Awareness month, as children are now increasingly affected by cancers, with figures touching 60,000-80,000 children in India each year. However, 60-80% of these children affected by cancers can survive if detected early. The Department of Paediatric Surgery, Christian Medical College (CMC), Ludhiana, organized a Flash Mob as an Awareness Activity for this noble cause. Dr. William Bhatti, Director, Professor and Head, Department of Paediatric surgery and Dr. Vishal Michael, Assistant Professor, Pediatric Surgeon addressed the gathering about common Paediatric cancers and need for awareness in community. Dr. Tanvi Goel, Mch Pediatric Surgery from AIIMS New Delhi and Dr Swati Daniel from his team were also present to spread the message. There were two subsequent events, first at Pavilion Mall at 5 pm and the next at Sarabha Nagar Market at 6 pm. Medical students participated in putting together a short yet very entertaining and enthusing dance. Thereafter, the emphasis was on importance of early detection and treatment. They also told that white spot in eye, lump in abdomen, unexplained fever, weight loss, fatigue, easy bruising and bleeding are common signs of cancer in childhood. The theme of the events were: Together we fight, We will be Better.
The department has organised various activities and classes in the hospital for this noble cause to spread awareness among the nursing and medical students and staff. In the future, they are planning a Walkathon on 26th September, 2021 (next Sunday) from Rakh Bagh to CMC which plans to involve more students and members of the community and spread awareness among childhood cancers across Ludhiana. The main motto of all these activities is that no child in Punjab should succumb to cancer easy bruising and bleeding are common signs of cancer in childhood. The theme of the events were: Together we fight, We will be Better.
