Chandigarh, 6 April, 2016: Free Blood Sugar test camps organized today in all the District and Sub divisional hospitals across Punjab to mark the World Health Day received an overwhelming response from people. As many as 12117 people got themselves examined for diabetes during these camps.
This was disclosed here today by Ms.Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Punjab. She said that in view of this year's theme 'Halt the rise, Beat diabetes', the Punjab Govt. had decided to hold free blood sugar test camps in all district and sub divisional hospitals of the State on 6th and 7th April. People diagnosed with high/low blood sugar levels were examined by Medical Specialists in the Govt. Hospitals and given free medicines. She said that these camps will also be held tomorrow also (7th April) from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in Govt. Hospitals and urged the people to come forward and get their blood sugar levels tested, free of cost. Principal Secretary added that a large no. of people came forward at Ludhiana, where 3226 people were examined out of which 643 were referred to the Medical Specialists. Similarly Patiala also witnessed high no. of people visiting Govt. Hospitals empty stomach today morning, where the figure touched 2152 out of which 228 people were referred to Medical Specialists for advice. At Sangrur 1097 people, at Amritsar 890, at Bathinda 511, at Pathankot 452 people came forward to avail the free of cost blood sugar test, besides hundreds of people in other districts as well.
Ms. Vini Mahajan further informed that the factors that may lead to diabetes include obesity, absence of balance diet, mental stress, irregular meals and lack of exercise etc. The symptoms of diabetes may include frequent urge of thirst and urination, fatigue, weakness, delayed healing of wounds, unexplained weight loss, numbness in hands or feet etc. Anyone having such symptoms should get the requisite investigations done from the nearest health institution at the earliest.
