Chandigarh, August 8, 2024: Transgender Cell of Government Home Science College, Chandigarh organized an awareness session on the implementation of ‘The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. 

Amit was the resource person of the session. He is currently serving as a Counsellor, Transgender Awareness Cell in the Department of Social Welfare, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He highlighted about the challenges and difficulties faced by the transgenders and clarified various common myths on who transgenders are. Amit also quoted various Acts and Centrally sponsored schemes like the Old Age Pension, National Pension Scheme, Disability Pension Scheme etc that now include transgenders under their ambit. Furthermore, his session focused on various government facilities for transgender community in hospitals, schools and public places so as to encourage inclusivity. In his concluding remarks, he stressed upon the fact that every institution needs to establish an Anti-Discrimination Cell and appoint a Complaint and a Nodal Officer to register any case of discrimination against the transgender students. 

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal applauded the efforts of the cell and stressed upon the significance of organising such sessions. She further encouraged everyone to have an attitude of love, care and respect for transgender community and support in spreading the inclusivity of the “Third Gender”.
