Chandigarh, September 10, 2024: Government Home Science College, Chandigarh organised a one day workshop on Lippan Art on September 10, 2024. Department of Art along with the Department of Resource Management & Extension of the college collaborated together to host this vibrant Lippan Art workshop for the students of B.Sc. Home Science 2nd year and 3rd year IDRM, offering a unique cultural experience and an opportunity to explore traditional Indian art.
The workshop, led by artist Jyoti, working with Pidilite, a color brand in India, aimed to introduce students to the techniques and history behind this ancient art form. Lippan Art, a traditional craft originating from the Kutch region of Gujarat, involves creating intricate patterns using clay and mirrors, and is known for its beautiful, reflective quality. The workshop provided students with hands-on experience towards this art form which is renowned for its stunning mirror work and traditional motifs.
During the workshop students created their own Lippan Art pieces through the process of applying clay to surfaces, embedding mirrors, and designing traditional patterns. Participants expressed their enthusiasm about the experience, as they had never tried anything like this before. The entire experience was enriching and fun filled for them.
Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, highlighted that Lippan Art is not just about technique, rather it is about connecting with a rich cultural tradition. She also emphasized that such hands on workshops enhance not only students’ academic experience but also prepare them for success in a globalized world.
