Chandigarh, October 16, 2024: During the final day of the three day workshop on mental health awareness, Department of Human Development, Government Home Science College, Chandigarh organised Interactive Session to raise awareness about mental health issues and to fight the stigma still associated with it.

Anjali Taneja,Assistant Professor & Psychologist, Deptt. of Psychology, D.A.V. College, Chandigarh was the resource person. She addressed the students on mental health issues, the stigma associated with it and what students can do to promote mental health.  

Taneja actively interacted with students about the unfortunate taboo against discussing issues of mental health in our society and about the labels attached to those who are suffering from mental illnesses. She made the entire session interesting with personality games which the entire audience enjoyed thoroughly. At the end of the session, she shared few coping techniques with students which can help them to increase awareness regarding their own thoughts and feelings, thereby reducing anxiety and further boosting their levels of concentration. Students were told strategies like controlling negative thoughts, engaging in a hobby, exercise, making lifestyle changes and seeking professional help when required. Prizes were also awarded to the winners of Poster Making Contest.  

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal applauded the efforts of the department for organising the session on mental health awareness. She further elaborated that anyone can be affected by it. Hence, it is important to talk about mental health and take necessary steps to deal with problems like anxiety, stress and depression. Prof. Katyal emphasised that the college makes conscious efforts to foster mental health awareness among students and providing them with the resources and support needed to maintain their emotional well-being. In her concluding remarks, she mentioned that through such educational programs, outreach initiatives, and collaborative efforts, we strive to create a more compassionate and understanding society.
