Global Hand Washing Day observed at DMCH
Each year October 15th is celebrated s Global Hand Washing Day to raise awareness about the importance of hand washing with soap and water.
Ludhiana, October 15, 2022: Each year October 15th is celebrated s Global Hand Washing Day to raise awareness about the importance of hand washing with soap and water. This year theme for the day is ‘Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene’
To commemorate this day, Department of Microbiology DMCH organised a public awareness talk in Rural Health Centre Pohir and in the OPD Block of DMCH. Also a hands- on training was conducted for MBBS students in clinical areas on hand hygiene audit and a quiz for technical staff was conducted.
On the occasion, all the faculty members sign a pledge to frequently wash their hands and maintain good hand hygiene.
In his message, Secretary DMCH Managing Society Prem Kumar Gupta appreciated the efforts of Department of Microbiology for conducting this awareness session.
Principal Dr Sandeep Puri, highlighted that COVID-19 pandemic made us realize the importance of effective hand washing. Maintaining good hand hygiene is one of the most important aspects of living a healthy lifestyle said Dr Puri.
Dr Ashwani k Chaudhary,Medical Supdt. & Chairman Infection Control Committee stressed that it is crucial to raise awareness about hand hygiene as many germs cause sickness and can spread if we do not wash our hands with soap and clean water especially after coughing, sneezing, using the bathroom, and before preparing food.
Dr Veenu Gupta, Professor & Head Department of Microbiology highlighted that keeping hands clean can prevent 1 in 3 diarrheal illness and 1 in 5 respiratory infections (such as common cold, flu, COVID 19 etc.) Hand Hygiene is the simple most effective method to reduce transmitter of pathogen and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
Dr Veenu explained simple ways of washing your hands:
• Wet your hands with running water and apply a liquid or clean soap bar.
• Rub palm to palm
• Right palm over the back of left hand and left palm over back of right hand.
• Palm to palm with bent and spread out fingers.
• Back of finger to opposing palms with fingers interlocked.
• Circular rubbing of left thumb in closed right hand and vice versa.
• Circular rubbing backwards and forwards with closed right fingertips in left palm and vice versa
