Amritsar, March 18, 2015: The Senate and Syndicate of the Guru Nanak Dev University approved the Budget Estimates of 338 Crore 34 Lac and 75 thousand for the year 2015-16 with a deficit of 76 Crore 56 Lac and 80 thousands.  The University would receive a maintenance grant of 35 Crore 54 Lac and 85 thousands from the Punjab Government, and Rs 171 Crore 51 Lac and 86 thousands would be raised by the University from its own sources. The Vice-Chancellor informed the house that the University would try to meet the deficit by keeping control on its expenditure.

It was specially mentioned that this year also no financial burden shall be imposed on students. It is pertinent to mention that for last three year no fees hike has been imposed. This year also the fee structure would remain the same.   Prof. A.S. Brar, Vice-Chancellor presided over both the meetings and Prof. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Registrar presented the agenda in both the meetings.

Of the total budget 52.34 percent would be spent on teaching, applied teaching, research and improvement of education.

During financial year 2014-15, the University has spent Rs. 5 crores 8 lac to help the economically backward and intelligent students. Rs. 16 lac and 58 thousand were  spent to help the handicapped students in the form of scholarships. Special scholarships and facilities in terms of finance were also provided to sports personal and student-artists to encourage them to participate in cultural and sports activities. A total of 150 full time non-NET Ph.D scholars are being given 8000 scholarship per month under UPE Scheme.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. A.S. Brar said that the tuition fee and funds for admission (2015-16) in professional courses of rural campuses of Guru Nanak Dev University would be reduced by 30 percent. This will be applicable to Guru Nanak Dev University Regional Campus Sathiala and Regional Campus Fattu Dhinga, Sultanpur Lodhi for the students of first semester of academic session 2015-16.

He said that from 2015-16 academic year, the Chair for Study of the Ghadar Movement would be established for the period of next five years, to study the contribution of freedom fighters and make them to reach general masses. 

Brar informed the house that from this academic session, keeping in view the demand of area the University would start a new Department of Tourism and Hospitality. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
