Grow high yielding moong variety ‘SML 1827’: PAU urges farmers

Ludhiana, April 2, 2024: In an unswerving commitment to promote crop diversification in Punjab, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has successfully developed short duration improved varieties of mungbean for the summer season.
Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, observed, “Pulses are the best option for crop diversification in Punjab state as they improve soil health and are rich source of protein. Summer mungbean can be successfully grown as an additional catch crop after potato, raya/wheat under assured irrigation facilities.” The University aims at popularizing pulse production in Indo-Gangetic plains, he said, while urging the farmers to grow variety SML 1827 which has been giving high yield and is more resistant to yellow mosaic disease than Star 444 variety of moong.
Dr Rajinder Singh, Associate Director (Seeds), informed that PAU has developed a high yielding and short duration summer moong variety ‘SML 1827.’ “Its average yield is 5.0 quintals per acre and is resistant to yellow mosaic disease. It has erect plant type with medium stature. It bears pods in clusters and has synchronous maturity in about 62 days. Each pod contains about 10 seeds. Grains are shining green and medium sized with good culinary properties,” he added.
The seed of SML 1827 is available at various Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Farm Advisory Service Centres, Regional Research Stations and University Seed Farms located in various districts of the state.
