Department of History, Panjab University today organised “Hari Ram Gupta Memorial Lecture in Seminar Room, Department of History, Panjab University.

Chandigarh, February 25, 2025: Department of History, Panjab University today organised “Hari Ram Gupta Memorial Lecture in Seminar Room, Department of History, Panjab University.
Professor Himadri Banerjee, Jadavpur University, Kolkata and Professor Harish K. Puri, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar delivered the lectures.
Professor Himadri Banerjee address on the theme of “Hyphenated Sikh Groups Beyond Punjab Colonial and Post Colonial India”. He threw light on the various Sikh identities based on regions like-Agrahari Sikhs in Bihar, Odia Sikhs, Mon Sikhs, Burman Sikhs, Dakkhani Sikhs, Sindhi Sikhs, Sikhs on Jammu and Kashmir etc. Prof. Banerjee highlighted the affinities and variations among them.
The presidential remark was given by Prof. Harish K. Puri. He thanked the organiser for invitation and conveyed sincere gratitude to Professor Hari Ram Gupta. Prof. Puri appreciated the presentation for and hearing the Inter-disciplinary approach, hard labour, collecting facts and thought provoking lecture of the speaker.
Dr. Ashish Kumar introduced the theme of the lecture and presented a brief profile of Professor Hari Ram Gupta (1902-1992), a prominent historian and the founder of the Department of History in Panjab University. Prof. Gupta had won various prestigious national and international awards for his academic achievements.
Dr. Jasbir Singh, Chairperson, Department of History offered brief introductions of the guests- Professor Himadri Banerjee, Jadavpur University, Kolkata and Professor Harish K. Puri, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
Earlier, the event began with the welcome note by Chandandeep followed by the floral and formal welcome of the guests by Dr. Jasbir Singh, Chairperson, Department of History. The guests were honored with token with appreciation and gratitude with mementos.
Prof. Priyatosh Sharma delivered the formal vote of thanks. Prof. Veena Sachdeva, Prof. Sheena Pall, Prof. Reeta Grewal, Prof. Kuldeep Singh and other teachers from various departments witnessed the event.
The event was witnessed by approximately 100 teachers and students who came from various departments of the University.
