Health Experts at 5th Edition of Cancer Summit applaud inclusion of Cervical Cancer vaccine in National Immunisation Programme in Interim Budget 2024

New Delhi: During the 5th Edition of the Cancer Summit, esteemed experts from the medical and public health domain commended the government’s pivotal decision to incorporate cervical cancer vaccine into the national immunization program. The integration of the HPV vaccine into the national immunization agenda was heralded as a transformative step towards safeguarding public health and reducing the burden of cervical cancer on a national scale. The experts also noted that a National Cancer Control Policy in line with National TB Control Programme (RNTCP), National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme and Department of AIDS Control, can give significant outcome in curbing the growing number of cancer cases in the country. 

The 5th Edition of the Cancer Summit and Awards was organized by IHW Council and RAPID Global Cancer Alliance ahead of the World Cancer Day and witnessed an array of experts coming together to deliberate on the most critical aspects of holistic cancer management in the country. 

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shyam Aggarwal, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said, “a multifaceted approach is required for cancer as it is different from other infectious diseases. It is time we aggressively create awareness on early detection for better survival rates and equip the primary healthcare professionals with capacity building and relevant knowledge.”

The Cancer Summit saw deliberations around themes like the significant role that technology can play in revolutionizing cancer diagnostics and personalizing treatment plans, and ultimately enhancing patient outcomes. Genomics, artificial intelligence (AI), immunotherapy, precision medicine and inclusive insurance models were some of the other topics that saw experts delving into insightful discussions and information sharing. 

While taking part in the discussion Kamal Narayan, CEO, Integrated Health and Wellbeing Council, observed, “As we commemorate World Cancer Day let us not only raise awareness about early detection and preventive lifestyle measures but also celebrate the transformative power of technology in the fight against cancer. It is essential to recognize that early detection can be lifesaving, and by leveraging technological advancements, we can ensure timely interventions that can significantly improve patient outcomes.” 

The experts concluded that the Ayushman Bharat has been doing exceptional work in the realm of accessible and affordable healthcare and with the Interim Budget 2024 furthering the cause of healthcare and are optimistic that the future will bring more healthcare policy reforms but at the same time efforts at community and individual levels must continue. 

Every year on the 4th of February, the global community observes World Cancer Day, dedicated to tackling one of humanity's greatest challenges: the escalating prevalence of cancer worldwide. This year, the theme "Close the Care Gap" underscores the crucial need for equity and accessibility in cancer care. 

At the conclusion of the day-long event, the proceedings culminated in the presentation of the "Cancer Care Awards," honouring and commemorating the efforts of cancer care associations, professionals, and individuals within the ecosystem. These awards serve to recognize and celebrate their dedicated efforts in advancing comprehensive cancer care through pioneering innovations and to inspire more work in the realm of cancer care and management.
