Himachal Assembly urged to lead by example with live telecast initiative
The Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, which previously set a national precedent by becoming paperless, is now being called upon to lead once again by initiating live telecasts of its proceedings. This move is seen as a significant step towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and public engagement in the state's legislative process.
Dharamsala (Arvind Sharma), July 27, 2024: The Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, which previously set a national precedent by becoming paperless, is now being called upon to lead once again by initiating live telecasts of its proceedings. This move is seen as a significant step towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and public engagement in the state's legislative process.
Advocates for live telecasts argue that this initiative would enable citizens to stay informed about the discussions and decisions made by their elected representatives, providing an unfiltered view of the legislative process. "Live telecasting the assembly sessions would be a significant step towards greater transparency," said retired government employee Dinesh Gupta, a spokesperson for the campaign. "It would enable the citizens of Himachal Pradesh to witness firsthand the debates, deliberations, and decision-making processes that impact their lives."
Implementing live telecasts would also align Himachal Pradesh with other progressive states and countries that have adopted similar practices. It would demonstrate a commitment to openness and strengthen the democratic process by encouraging more active participation from the electorate. Businessman D. C. Sharma noted, "This initiative could serve as a model for other states, showcasing Himachal Pradesh as a leader in promoting democratic values and citizen engagement. By making the workings of the assembly accessible to all, the state can enhance trust and confidence in its legislative body."
A political leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, added, "The live telecast will provide an accurate picture of our representatives' activities in the house, ensuring they are accountable to their constituents."
As the call for live telecasts gains momentum, it remains to be seen how the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly will respond to this demand for increased transparency and public involvement. This initiative, if adopted, could further solidify the state's reputation as a pioneer in adopting progressive legislative practices.
