Dharamshala, March 02, 2025: The drug crisis in Himachal Pradesh has reached alarming levels, with three tragic deaths due to drug overdose reported in the past week alone. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state spokesperson Sanjay Sharma expressed grave concern over the situation, claiming that the actual number of such cases is significantly higher, as many incidents go unreported.
Sharma accused the ruling government of failing to curb the drug menace, stating that the drug mafia is operating unchecked across the state. “The current situation is both distressing and shameful. The Sukhu government has failed on every front, while the drug trade continues to thrive. The big drug dealers and mafia leaders remain beyond the reach of the police,” he said.
The BJP has demanded immediate and stringent action against drug networks in the state. Sharma reiterated his party’s commitment to supporting any government efforts to eradicate the drug trade. He highlighted that a resolution for an aggressive fight against drugs was passed at the BJP State Working Committee meeting in Una on July 19, 2024.
Criticizing the ruling Congress government, Sharma alleged that since its arrival, the drug problem has spiraled out of control due to political protection being extended to drug mafias. He pointed to recent cases exposing the nexus between drug traffickers, police officials, and politicians, emphasizing that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has remained silent on these critical issues.
“It is shocking that the Chief Minister has not taken a clear stance on this matter. Even when questions were raised about the integrity of senior police officers and the government’s inaction, no response was given. This silence only raises further doubts about the administration’s commitment to tackling the drug crisis,” Sharma stated.
