Mohali, July 14, 2014: Medical advancements in joint problem replacement and treatment have rung in joy and health for an elderly couple. Setting an example for their peers, who prefer to suffer over getting operated for joint problems, a couple from sector 50 C Chandigarh in their late 70s underwent joint replacement surgeries together.

Introducing the healthy and jubilant couple joint replacement surgeon and director orthopedics Dr Harsimran Singh at Fortis Hospital said that 76 years old Om Prakash Mathur and his wife 75 years old Pushpa Mathur underwent joint replacement surgeries the same day on June 30. While OP Mathur underwent total knee replacement, Pushpa Mathur underwent total hip replacement surgery.

“They used to experienced severe pain while even visiting bedroom or kitchen. An year ago, Om Prakash Mathur had undergone total knee replacement of the other knee, while five years ago, Pushpa Mathur underwent total knee replacement at Fortis,” said Dr Harsimran.

Both the patients were not able to walk properly. For their daily chores they were largely dependent on their children. It was after their son and daughter-in-law insisted that the elderly Mathur couple that struggled with the challenges of degenerative joint disease, braved surgery together so that they could walk in their sunset years with replaced and functioning knees. “We now look forward to resuming our life with our grandkids playing with them, visiting our place of worship, sit on the ground and go for walks together,” said beaming Mathur couple.

Dr Harsimran said that in the times when implants customized as per the bone of patient is available and could be implanted with the computer-navigated surgery. “The computer assisted knee surgery uses a computer software program to calculate angles of knee. Enabling surgeon to conducted surgery with greater accuracy and precision of the tune of 1mm variation,” explained Dr Harsimran, who has achievement of performing more than 5,000 cases of Columbus Knee with Orthopilot (computer assisted).
