Jalandhar, October 8, 2024: The I-Social Club of PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar, organised a Group Discussion on the topic ‘Indigenous Knowledge Systems in Films and Literature.’
The event saw active participation from students who explored how indigenous wisdom and traditions are portrayed in contemporary films and literary works, highlighting the role of media in preserving and promoting cultural heritage.
The participants engaged in an animated discussion on how these mediums contribute to documenting traditional practices, beliefs, and ways of life that have been passed down through generations.
A significant part of the discussion centered around the portrayal of indigenous knowledge in Indian cinema. The participants delved into films like Kantaara, Stree, and Tumbaad, which have woven indigenous beliefs, folklore, and practices into their narratives. Kantaara was appreciated for its deep-rooted depiction of rituals and the relationship between nature and humans in rural communities. Stree was discussed for its use of folklore and the blending of traditional beliefs with contemporary social themes, while Tumbaad was analyzed for its exploration of mythological elements and indigenous storytelling techniques.
The students reflected on how these films successfully introduce audiences to lesser-known localised cultures while delivering compelling narratives.
In addition to cinema, the discussion also focused on the role of literature wherein works by renowned authors such as Chinua Achebe and Leslie Marmon Silko were brought up, with participants noting how storytelling in literature serves as a powerful tool to preserve the wisdom and cultural practices of indigenous communities. Ethical concerns regarding the portrayal of indigenous knowledge in mainstream media were also debated, with an emphasis on maintaining authenticity and respect for these traditions.
President Naresh Budhia, Senior Vice President Vinod Dada, other members of the managing committee and Principal Prof.(Dr.) Pooja Prashar applauded the club and its Nodal Officer, Aabroo Sharma for facilitating an enriching exchange of ideas on the cultural significance and future of such representations.
