ICAR-CIPHET grants license for kinnow peel wine technology to Mohali based firm

Ludhiana: Kinnow peel is a major waste generated during processing of Kinnow or after consumption of fruits directly. Kinnow peels account for a significant part of the total fresh fruit weight, which largely remain unutilized .or are disposed of in open fields or municipal bins, leading to environmental pollution problems. Kinnow peels are rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, sugars and phenolic compounds. Because of their nutritional composition and antioxidant potential, Kinnow peels could be used to make value-added products like beverages. Development of value-added products from Kinnow peels not only offer a good opportunity for using a freely available substrate but also help in reducing the environmental pollution caused by poor disposal of such wastes.

ICAR-CIPHET Ludhiana has developed technology of “Process for Preparation of Alcoholic Beverage with Nutraceutical Properties from Kinnow Peels”. With the growing urbanization and increasing quality consciousness the market for processed foods and functional foods is expected to grow more rapidly. The technology was developed by Dr. H.S. Oberoi. The technology was transferred by Dr. Nachiket Kotwaliwale, Director, CIPHET Ludhiana, to M/s Bio-Age Equipments & Services, Mohali and assured them that all possible help will be extended for establishment of food processing business. On this occasion Dr. K. Narsaiah, Dr. Ramesh Chand Kasana & Dr. Ranjeet Singh were also present.
