IIIT-Hyderabad to host Developer Tutorial and Hackathon on Smart City solutions using open source implementation of oneM2M with University of Toulouse

Hyderabad, October 22, 2018: IIIT-Hyderabad is hosting a developer tutorial from 27-28 October using open source implementation of oneM2M, developed by French research lab, LAAS – CNRS and organised by India EU ICT Standards Collaboration Project. This activity is part of “India-EU Partnership Project for Collaboration on ICT standardization, Policy and Regulatory matters”, which is jointly anchored by TSDSI and ETSI, the Telecom SDOs from India and EU respectively.

The tutorial, conducted by a team of French professors from University of Toulouse will enable technology developers and students to build standards compliant applications for Internet of Things and provide interoperability and other key benefits of standardisation.

This will be followed by a hackathon on 28th October with a Smart City theme aimed at creating new applications that a smart city could offer its citizens, its elected officials or its technical and administrative services in a multi-domain vision based on the oneM2M standard.

The hackathon as an instrument also enables visibility to talented youth and might result in creation of startups and enterprises in the country apart from providing policy makers a view point of creative problem solving of some of the toughest challenges faced by the country.

The challenges for the hackathon include energy efficiency in smart buildings, pollution monitoring, smart healthcare services and disaster management.

According to Sachin Gaur, Coordinator: EU–India Cooperation, the hackathon has received around 200 entries from all-over the country and has been shortlisted to the top 20 solutions. The top 20 teams will be taught how to build standard compliant solutions, hence making their solutions global and interoperable. This intervention will hopefully contribute towards the flagship projects of the government like Startup India and Make in India. The winning team will get a fully paid trip funded by EU to attend a leading startup event in Estonia in January 2019.

Speaking on this event, Prof Sachin Chaudhari, Signal Processing and Communication Research Center (SPCRC), IIIT-H said, “IoT is one of the main research topics at IIIT-H and we are glad to host this event focusing on IoT applications for Smart Cities which are very relevant for India. This event will also facilitate collaboration with the researchers ofLAAS CNRS, City of Bordeaux, ETSI, TSDSI, City of Hyderabad, EU Delegation to India and other relevant stakeholders. LAAS CNRS have deployed smart city applications in the French city of Bordeaux. In collaboration with them, we would like to build similar applications in the Indian context in the city of Hyderabad”.
