Importance of World Day for International Justice – 17th July

World Day for International Justice is celebrated every year throughout the World on July 17th as a significant day to recognize the emerging system of International Criminal Justice. As per the facts, this day commemorates the historic adoption of the Rome Statute in year 1998, and later with help of this treaty, International Criminal Court was established, to investigate and try individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the International community. About 139 countries have signed the Court's treaty and have ratified it. This day rather marks the importance of continuing fight against impunity and bringing justice for the victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, as it calls on all countries to join this fight so that perpetrators of such crimes are punished, and future occurrences of such crimes be prevented.

Being a practicing Criminal Lawyer, based in Punjab (India) and member of International Bar Association, United Kingdom, I am of the firm view that this day is a reminder of the urgency for the Bar and Bench around the globe to ensure continued support for the International justice system as it demonstrates the crucial role of civil society members in ensuring that states live up to their obligations. Moreover the day unites all those who wish to support justice, promote the rights of the victims, helps in preventing crime that threatens the peace, security, and well-being of the world. I felt most appropriate to share the meaningful quote by Noble Prize winner Martin Luther King, Jr. "Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere”

World Day for International Justice should be celebrated to make people aware and united to support justice and promote the rights of the victims. Events around the world are organized to promote this day and also to support the International Criminal Court and thus this way attracts people around the world to pay attention to protect people from several crimes and also warns those people who affect the peace, security, and well-being of the nation at risk.

The Legal Fraternity also being the Vital Cog of the Society, must host events to promote concept and importance of this day i.e. World Day for International Justice and support International Criminal Court as it act as an instrumental tool for investigating and prosecuting the criminals in situations where States are unable or unwilling to cater Justice.
