India in the global rise of religious politics
Interactive session held in PU
Chandigarh: An interactive session was organised by the Department of Political Science, Panjab University with Prof Mark Juergensmeyer, Professor of Sociology and Global Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara, here today on “India in The Global Rise of Religious Politics”.
Having worked in the field of religious mobilizations in Punjab, he contextualized the political realities within which such movements arise. He provided detailed insights on how Ad Dharm Movement and Khalistani Movement emerged as a response to the census conducted by the Britishers and the failure of the Indian model of secular nation respectively. By drawing parallel between these movements and current events like Brexit and Trump’s election, he argued how globalization comes in confrontation with identity politics. This has culminated in a new wave of narrow nationalism where the idea of the nation states is again being tied to religious and ethnic identities.
The talk ended with a question and answer session and followed by concluded remarks by Prof Ronki Ram, Department of Political Science, Panjab University.
