INDIAN HEART SURGEON’S PAPER PUBLISHED IN PRESTIGIOUS EUROPEAN JOURNAL
Ludhiana, October 29, 2018: A prestigious journal – the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (EJVES) – has published an extremely rare case operated for the first time by any surgeon in the world. This case was operated upon in the state of Punjab in Ludhiana. Dr Harinder Singh Bedi – Chairman of Cardio Vascular Sciences – stated that it was a matter of great pride for India that a paper from here has got published in the latest issue of the EJVES (Thrombosis in a Massive Varix – Harinder Singh Bedi - EJVES Oct 2018 ). This is one of the most well respected medical journals of the world. To get a publication here gives a stamp of recognition to the excellent surgical work being done in India. Dr Bedi explained that Mr Jai Kumar - a 57 year old Government employee – a resident of Dashmesh Nagar Ludhiana – was suffering from dilated leg veins – called varicose veins – for a number of years . Suddenly he developed severe pain and increase in size. He was referred to Dr HS Bedi who on investigation found that the whole of the superficial veins of the left leg were full of large clots. This is known as thrombosis in a varix. On a thorough internet search it was realized that this was the largest varix ever reported in the world. Dr Bedi explained that the patient was at a risk for developing a potentially fatal condition called a pulmonary embolism. In this condition the clot gets stuck in the main lung artery and can literally choke a patient from within. The patient underwent a major surgery where all the diseased segmented were removed. Mr Jai Singh was very happy with the surgery and was back on his feet in a very short time. Dr Bedi is a pioneer in the treatment of varicose veins having conducted a teaching Institute international workshop on this in Punjab in 2011 . Since then he has treated a large number of cases successfully with minimally invasive laser techniques and is a respected member of International associations dealing with this problem. Seeing the rarity of the case (never before reported in the world) and the successful management – the editors of EJVES decided to publish the case in the latest October issue. Dr Bedi was extremely happy that the good work of Indian surgeons is now finding its deserving place in the International scientific arena. He reiterated his commitment to deliver International level care to the people of this region.
