Innovative farmer from Rajasthan delivers talk at PAU

Ludhiana, December 2, 2014: An innovative farmer from village Dhabayawali, Danta (Sikar), Rajasthan, Sunda Ram Verma visited the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today and delivered a talk on the topic “Rainfed Agriculture and Forestry.” Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU; senior officials and faculty of the University attended the lecture, held during the monthly meet of Review Committee for Extension and Research Work.
Verma suggested cultivating fields before the arrival of monsoon and then after the last monsoon. He has successfully grown ardu plants by using just one litre of water. A science graduate, Verma has collected more than 700 local varieties of 15 crops and developed diverse varieties of chilli, guara, moth and kabuli gram through selection. He is known for a rich germplasm collection of several crops like bajra, coriander, moong, jeera, onion, bitter gourd and fenurgreek. He has deposited over 400 varieties of different corps to the Gene Bank of National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources. Besides, he has also developed cereal, oil seed, pulses, vegetable and aromatic crops based crop rotation for higher net returns and conservation of natural resources.
Dr Dhillon lauded the achievements of 61-year old progressive farmer, and said, “Verma’s remarkable innovation in the development of technologies for rainfed agriculture and forestry is highly acknowledgeable.”
Dr R.S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education, appreciated the innovative ideas shared by Verma with PAU faculty. He said that Verma’s work has been recognised at the state, national and international level, and been decorated with several prestigious awards. He is a recipient of International Award for Agro-biodiversity by International Development Research Centre, Canada; Shri Jagjivan Ram Kisan Puraskar by ICAR; and a national award in germaplsm conservation by Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.
