In a statement here today, they told that a call for the same had been given by the World Federation of Trade unions (WFTU). They said the call had been endorsed by CITU and several other Trade Unions of the country.

They said they would be demanding by observing the day that right to food and clean drinking water should be made fundamental universal rights , free public and qualitative education for all, free health services and free medicines to all under social security  umbrella and decent housing to every worker.

Condemning the Congress led UPA Govt, the CITU leaders told that in India, in view of the neo-liberal economic policies of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation was being pursued by the UPA led government at the Centre.

Further, they said the number of billionaires and millionaires had increased manyfold, but the number of people under nourishment amongst he children was found to be 42% as admitted by the Prime Minister himself as national shame, malnutrition amongst the women had exceeded the previous record. While one capitalist could construct a house worth Rs.8,000 crores, several crores of people did not have even an inch of land, let alone any house on their own.

They said for fetching clean drinking water, everyday woman in several villages had to walk miles together, super-specialty hospital sprung as best commercial outfits making huge profits but the poor were deprived of basic emergency needs on health problems.

Further, they said education, having being commercialised, the poor children did not get free, public, qualitative education and the nation is sought to be deprived of healthy, knowledgeable future citizens. Lack of housing facilities in the urban areas and cities had also contributed to the increase of HIV-AIDS. These situations could not be tolerated, they said.

They sought that in place of the prevailing “jungle law”, “survival of the fittest”, “the human law” and “ welfare of the weakest” must prevail.

Further, they said Punjab CITU called upon all its units to observe October 3 as “International Action Day”by holding rallies, demonstrations, conventions and seminars to highlight the basic demands of the working class all over the World.
