International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed at PU
The Department of Community Education and Disability Studies, Panjab University today observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”.
Chandigarh, December 3, 2024: The Department of Community Education and Disability Studies, Panjab University today observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”.
The objectives of the program were to make the awareness about protection of the rights, prevention, to ensure the sustainable development of people with special needs. To achieve the objectives, many events like drawing competition among identified children with special needs and among children having learning difficulty at basic level, poster presentation and essay writing were organised. The students also held a rally.
The programme started with a Quiz that was based on the theme of Disability as a broader area of the spectrum. The quiz had two levels including a screening test. A total of five teams competed for the title. The winners of the quiz competition were Umang, Shivani(P), Shivani (H), and Hema who secured the first position.
The game named “Orientation and Mobility” was also organised in which pairs were made. In each pair, one person was blindfolded and another person had to give directions to that person to overcome the obstacles in the way. Everyone participated in this game including students, teachers, and staff members. The game was specifically designed to experience the life of a visually impaired person and what types of problems they face in their daily life. Disability is a matter of perception and the positive side is to see ability in every disability, said Dr Md. Saifur Rahman, Chairperson of the department. He said that the students must collaborate with parents of Children with special needs and community to boost children’s ability and attitude towards joyful life.
Department organizing committee members Vanshika, Kritika, Riya, and Bhinder also participated in the function. The celebrations ended with a vote of thanks by Mr. Nitin Raj.
