Dharamshala, October 16, 2024: The State Disaster Management Authority has commended the outstanding efforts of Kangra district in preparing a robust task force of volunteers for disaster preparedness and response. In recognition of these efforts, Kangra district was awarded the first prize on International Disaster Reduction Day.
Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa shared that Kangra has achieved this distinction by training the highest number of volunteers in the state, with a total of 9,500 individuals trained in various aspects of disaster management. "Our primary focus has been on capacity building within the district to ensure swift and effective relief and rescue operations at the local level during disasters," Bairwa said.
He emphasized the critical role volunteers play in disaster response, noting that their training enables immediate action in evacuating affected individuals and providing first aid. To strengthen local preparedness, the district has initiated the formation of 'disaster friends' and volunteer groups in every panchayat, with specialized training in disaster response techniques.
Additionally, masons are being trained at the panchayat level to ensure safe construction practices, particularly in earthquake-prone areas, to minimize loss of life and property in case of a natural calamity.
Bairwa also highlighted the district's ongoing efforts to raise public awareness about disaster preparedness. "Given that Kangra experienced the state's first major natural disaster in 1905, with over 20,000 casualties due to an earthquake, we remain vigilant. The district lies in an earthquake-sensitive zone," he said.
In response to this, the Chief Minister has announced the establishment of a primary SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) training institute in Palampur, further solidifying Kangra’s role in disaster management and preparedness
