Dharamshala, March 28, 2025: The District Administration of Kangra is set to organize a series of events on April 4, 2025, to mark the 120th anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck the region in 1905. The disaster, one of the deadliest in India's history, claimed approximately 20,000 lives and damaged over one lakh buildings.
In a meeting chaired by SDM Dharamshala, Sanjeev Kumar, officials outlined the schedule for the commemoration. A tribute march will commence at 10:30 AM from the DC office to the Police Ground in Dharamshala, honoring those who lost their lives in the tragedy. The event will also focus on raising awareness about disaster preparedness and management.
The administration has planned various activities, including speech and slogan-writing competitions for schoolchildren and a theatrical performance on disaster management by folk artists to educate the public.
Speaking about the initiative, SDM Sanjeev Kumar emphasized the importance of learning from past tragedies. "We must ensure that such disasters do not cause devastation in the future. Disaster preparedness is crucial to minimizing losses," he said.
Officials from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Education, and Health Departments will participate in the event to spread awareness about safety measures and response strategies.
This commemoration serves as both a tribute to the victims and a reminder of the need for preparedness in disaster-prone areas.
