Chandigarh, March 17, 2025: Distinguished Geologist Prof. Gurmeet Kaur delivered a keynote lecture on Stones: Timeless Beauty and More at the prestigious Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. She was the Chief Guest at the function organised by the Indian Statistical Institute to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Prof. Gurmeet Kaur is a Professor of Geology at Panjab University, Chandigarh, and Chair of the Heritage Stone Subcommission (IUGS). She co-leads the UNESCO-IGCP project HerSTONES and has edited special volumes for Geoheritage and Episodes. With over 50 publications, she authored Natural Stone and World Heritage: Delhi-Agra (Taylor & Francis) and co-edited The First 55 IUGS Heritage Stones, unveiled at the 37th IGC (2024, Busan). 

In her address, Prof. Gurmeet Kaur emphasised the significance of stones not only as aesthetic commodities but also as integral to cultural evolution. She elaborated on her points with examples from India and abroad. 

This was followed by a panel discussion featuring two guests, Damayanti Sen, ADG, West Bengal Police, and Ms Anwesha Santra, journalist at The Statesman, who opened the discussion on Does Increasing Women’s Participation Effectively Lead to Gender Equality?

Earlier, the function began with a welcome address by the Convener of the IWD Committee, ISI, followed by a speech from the Director of ISI, Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay.
