Kidney donors honoured at Max Hospital
Mohali, March 14, 2019: On World Kidney Day, the kidney donors who donated their kidneys to save the life of their near and dear were honoured at Max Hospital on Thursday. During occasion, Sandeep Dogra, Senior VP & Zonal Head, Dr GP Malik, Medical Advisor and Director-Internal Medicine and team from Max renal department including Dr Vinay Sakhuja, Dr Munish Chauhan, Dr Jagdish Sethi and and Dr Manish Singla were presented. Speaking during occasion, Sandeep Dogra said that since our first kidney transplant in august 2013, we have performed 600 kidney transplants of which the region’s 1st successful ABO-incompatible kidney transplant was conducted in May 2014 year which places us amongst the very few centres doing ABO incompatible transplant all over the country. We have performed transplants in HIV positive individuals , only a handful of which have been done all over the world.”. Doctors at hospital broke blood barrier in organ transplant last year giving hope to patients looking for donors without blood group matching, informed Dr Dogra. Dr Malik said that World Kidney Day is a global awareness campaign aimed at raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide. We all know that India is known as the diabetes capital of the World. There are 6 crore people with diabetes in India, more than any other nation on the planet. And at least 30% of diabetics will develop chronic kidney disease because of diabetes, he maintained. Surprisingly 2,00,000 new patients need dialysis treatment every year in India. But the unfortunate reality is that only 10 to 20% of them get proper treatment, he pointed out.
