Jalandhar, August 24, 2024: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous), pioneering institution for women’s education, solemnly observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day with a series of commemorative events.
The event was organised by Department of History. The day was marked by a deep reflection on the tragic partition of India in 1947, which resulted in massive displacements, loss of lives, and widespread suffering. The observance began with the screening of a documentary that poignantly captured the pain and devastation of the partition. Through archival footage, first-hand accounts, and expert interviews, the documentary shed light on the massive human cost of the partition, evoking an emotional response from the audience. The event also featured a compelling display of photographs from the partition era. These historical images, curated from various archives, depicted scenes of mass migration, refugee camps, and the harrowing conditions faced by displaced people. As part of the day’s events, students of KMV were invited to share their thoughts and reflections on the partition. Many students spoke about how learning about the partition has deepened their understanding of India’s history and the importance of peace and harmony in the present day.
Principal Prof. Dr. Atima Sharma Dwivedi emphasised the significance of commemorating the horrors of partition as a vital aspect of the nation’s collective memory. She averred that the partition was a defining moment in our history, and we must remember the lessons it has taught us. It is our responsibility to ensure that the younger generation understands the gravity of this event and works towards creating a future where such horrors are never repeated. She lauded the efforts of Dr Gurjot, Head, Department of History for successfully organising the event.
