KMV enters into the fourth day of Inspire Camp

Jalandhar, December 7, 2018: On the fourth day of the 9th 5-day INSPIRE-Camp at Kanya Maha Vidyalaya-The Heritage and Autonomous Institution, Jalandhar many renowned academicians gave talks to the participating students. The program started with an interactive session by Dr P.K.Pati, Professor & Head, Department of Biotechnology, GNDU, Amritsar. He gave his talk on “RNA interference in Agriculture: Shaping the Future”. He stressed upon the implementation of Biotechnology (such as plant tissue culture, genetic engineering etc.) for improving the crop varieties to overcome starvation in a responsible manner. He also explained RNA interference technology to students in a very simplified manner. He told the story of commercial production of Blue Rose. He made students aware of many case studies on plants such as Petunia, Mavera Corn, Brassica Napus, Nicotiana Tobaccum and also the process to generate their better varieties through RNA interference technology. The next session comprised a workshop by Dr. Saroj Arora, a scholar/professor from GNDU Amritsar on the topic ''Dietary Antioxidant Insurer of Health''. She extensively made students aware about the process in which the free radicals create themselves in human body and she also threw light on their ill effects. She also enlightened the students that how these free radical enhance the oxidative stress, which has a major role in ageing process. Furthermore, she also advocated that healthy lifestyle can slow down the ageing process and decrease the severity of free radicals. To make the students more aware, she along with the students also performed some tests to check their efficiency.
The next lecture was delivered by Prof. A.S. Ahluwalia. He in his talk sensitized students about the global warming and climate change with reference to biodiversity and forest. He also related all these changes with the decrease in biodiversity and forest cover. He made the students aware that the average global temperature has risen by 1 degree in the last 30 years. The rate in increase in the global temperature is because of the increasing emissions of heat-trapping gases called green house gases in the atmosphere. All the greenhouse gases increase the temperature of earth at higher rate which is not in the favor of lives of human beings, animals and plants. Therefore, he motivated all the budding scientists to work actively toward Sustainable Development in order to protect our environment for future generation. The lecture was well received by the interns and session ended with an interactive session. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi extended her gratitude towards the guest speakers for providing such detailed information to the students and also enlightening them about the key concepts of science. She also apprised the students that the fifth day of INSPIRE Program will also be equally eventful & will witness the presence of many noted scientists & academicians.
