Experts Call for Human-Centred Approach to Artificial Intelligence

Jalandhar, March 25, 2025: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) organised One day National Seminar on “Manavata Di Punarkalpana” (Macchini Buddhimanta De Prasang Vich) sponsored by Punjab Kala Parishad, Chandigarh and Punjab Sahit Academy Chandigarh.
The Chief Guest Swaranjeet Singh Savi, Chairperson, Punjab Kala Parishad, Chandigarh and other dignitaries were accorded floral felicitations on this occasion. The event was presided over by Deepak Bali, Advisor to Punjab Heritage Tourism Promotion Board.
Welcoming the eminent scholars, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi highlighted the tremendous impact of intelligent machines that are reshaping how we think, communicate, and create to altering our understanding of purpose and connection. As artificial intelligence is no longer confined to mechanical tasks, continues to evolve and its impact extends beyond industries, economies, and daily habits, so AI compels us to redefine our identity challenging the notion of what it means to be human and what it might mean for our relationships, values, and societal issues of the day.
Swaranjeet Singh Savi, Chairperson, Punjab Kala Parishad, Chandigarh stated that their mission to Rebooting Punjab by extending frontiers of knowledge through artistic and educational activities largely focus on the impact of Digitalization in human life, hence new initiatives are being taken in the field of AI and Ethics.
In his key note address, Dr. Amarjit Singh Grewal, a noted Punjabi literary thinker and former faculty, GNDU elaborated on the power of AI in the age of Technological Feudalism where developed countries with advanced technologies have control over all resources. But History replete with evidences where mankind has evolved along with Technology as collaborators.
The Presiding dignitary Deepak Bali, while paying a glorious tribute to Lala Devraj ji, a visionary founding father of KMV, enunciated that he was an icon who revolutionized women education and laid a strong foundation for this premier light house of knowledge that blends a heritage of traditions with modernity. He further stated that the mode and format of learning may change but ethical content should always remain as a priority without change.
Academic session was presided by Dr. Manmohan Singh, former IPS officer, Chandigarh. He stressed upon the need of blending emotional intelligence with Thinking, as a contemplative process. He also added that new technologies bring new freedoms, new anxieties, hence new solutions. AI should be welcomed as it has the potential to ensure less opaqueness and more transparency.
The subject expert Dr. Kanwaljit Singh, Director, Punjabi University Computer Centre, Patiala affirmed that the power of AI cannot be undermined or negatively assessed, in fact, it is a tool that has augmented human competencies for improved efficiency since late 1950s when AI term was first coined. He quoted the examples of Deepfake, Gaming apps, Gemini & Chat GPT etc. These advancements blur the line between human and machine capabilities and thereby, inevitably are fraught with multiple risks and challenges also. Human-centred approach to AI should be the mandatory call to harness the potential of AI technologies.
Dr. Manjinder Singh, Head, School of Punjabi Studies, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar while delivering his talk was very optimistic about new Large Language Models emerging. He opined that AI is just an extension of Human Brain, not a replacement. Since human intelligence has always superseded technological devices in every age, so the need of the hour is that generative model of AI machine should be ethical and intelligently balanced.
