KMV observes International Day of Mathematics with Multifaceted Program

Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) PG Department of Mathematics celebrated the International Day of Mathematics by organizing a variety of activities as part of this major event. Some of the key activities included an expert talk on "Mathematical Methods and Models in Traffic Flow," a Mathematical Rangoli Competition, and an Eminent Mathematician’s Sketch-Making Competition. Over 50 students participated in these events, showcasing their mathematical interests and talents.

Jalandhar, April 8, 2025: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) PG Department of Mathematics celebrated the International Day of Mathematics by organizing a variety of activities as part of this major event. Some of the key activities included an expert talk on "Mathematical Methods and Models in Traffic Flow," a Mathematical Rangoli Competition, and an Eminent Mathematician’s Sketch-Making Competition. Over 50 students participated in these events, showcasing their mathematical interests and talents. 

The expert talk was delivered by Dr. Arvind Kumar Gupta, Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi extended a warm welcome to Dr. Gupta. During his session, Dr. Gupta focused on the application of Cellular Automata in traffic flow modeling, captivating students with his detailed explanation of the mathematical challenges and problem formulations involved. He discussed the various rules of Cellular Automata, particularly in its applications to physical and biological problems. The students were highly engaged during the session, posing insightful questions about open mathematical problems, problem-solving techniques, the significance of Pi, and its practical applications. The session had a significant impact, helping students gain a deeper understanding of the fascinating world of mathematics and its real-world relevance. The event also featured presentations on recent updates to the mathematics syllabus, aligned with the latest trends and advancements in the field. Students highlighted career opportunities and prospects in mathematics after completing their degree at KMV by Mathematical Modeling. Additionally, the students performed a Nukad Natak and a mathematical play, emphasizing how mathematics is omnipresent in daily life.  

Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi lauded the efforts of Mrs. Veena Deepak, Head, PG Department of Mathematics and the entire faculty for their efforts in successfully organizing the event, which underscores the significance of mathematics in everyday life.
