KMV only women college in the Punjab to have science departments with star status from department of biotechnology, GoI

Jalandhar: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya is the only women College in the Punjab to have ‘Star Status’ from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. There are at present116 colleges which are covered under Star College Scheme of Strengthening of Undergraduate Science education and only 29 college have achieved Star College Status in India. Science Departments having state of the art high tech labs provide hands on training to students. Student -Student mentoring workshops like Anubhooti are held from time to time. Students also present their minor research project outcomes in various National and International Conferences. Students are sent for Internships at institution of National repute like Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (Amritsar), Dr. B.R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar. Students are also provided Industrial exposure cum training at Gujarat Borosil Ltd. Bharuch, Sugar Mill Bhogpur, CIPET Amritsar, Pukhraj Organics Jalandhar. Many field visits are organized to enhance research exposure to students like Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, Corbett National Park, Uttrakhand, Central Research Institute, Kasauli, Central Scientific and Instrumentation Organization Chandigarh. KMV Science departments also hold many activities like student’s minor research projects, social extension program, industrial trainings, activities related to sensitising students regarding environment and social issues, educational trips to various institutes of national repute, expert talks by eminent scientists, activities related to subject learning by innovative methods etc. to enhance the scientific temperament among the students and to popularise science in masses. Various short-term and long-term activities as well as programmes are envisaged for the science clubs which are doable and relevant. Vikram Sarabhai Science Club of the College registered under Vigyaan Prasar, DST has been upgraded to silver category from Bronze category. Only three clubs in Punjab are recognised under silver category out of total 148 clubs. This up gradation is in recognition of excellent performance of students and achievements of faculty of KMV. Principal Prof.(Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi lauded the efforts of Faculty of Sciences and their students for this success. She averred that KMV's Faculty of Sciences dates back to the year 1950. Currently, the college has various Undergraduate & Postgraduate courses under Faculty of Sciences including M.Sc. Physics, M.Sc. Chemistry, M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Zoology, M.Sc. Botany, B.Sc. Medical, B.Sc. Non-Medical, B.Sc. Biotechnology (Professional), B.Sc. Hons. Physics, B.Sc. Hons. Mathematics, PG Diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics and a Certificate Course in Vedic Mathematics. Moreover, college have also received FIST Grant from Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. Under FIST Scheme college has set up high tech research labs with sophisticated equipment like FTIR, UV -Visible spectrometer, LCR, DTA, High temp glass furnaces, Alpha counting systems etc. Faculty is also undertaking research projects and guiding Ph.D. Scholars. Research scholars are provided opportunity to work on International Projects too. Recently two research scholars have completed their projects at Abdul Salaam International Centre of Theoretical Physics under ICTP Tril Fellowship and ENEA Italy.
KMV have also been organising Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research(INSPIRE) program by DST, Government of India continuously from the last 10 years. KMV have also established an Innovation Hub, a learning platform for all the students in which students learn various practical as well as theoretical aspects of science. Even students from various schools also visits KMV's Innovation Hub to understand the concepts of science. All these achievements speak up a volume about the constant hard work & dedication put up by KMV for the holistic development of the students.
