Jalandhar, October 31, 2014: “The world can be transformed into utopia where people may enjoy peaceful co-existence through meaningful shared experiences by rising above cultural complexities,” remarked Prof John Battaglino, an eminent speaker from Boston University, USA, during his invited talk in International Conference on Cross-Cultural Nuances (ICCN-14) organised by Kanya Maha Vidyalaya. 

The Chief Guest of this two-day conference, Dr. Karen S. Kingsbury, Professor of International Studies, Chatham University, USA and  the Guest of Honour, Dr. R.K. Mahajan, Dean Academics, GNDU were accorded floral felicitation.  In her inaugural address, the college Principal Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi reiterated the need of such initiatives of International Stature as the new paradigms of ‘knowledge society’ have made it imperative to transcend cultural barriers and promote mutual understanding and at the same time, welcome diverse cultural variants for the progression of mankind.

While delivering his presidential remarks, Chander Mohan, President, Arya Shiksha Mandal stressed upon the relevance of the topic and the aptness of the place for such meaningful exchange as India has always been a melting pot of various cultures, religious beliefs and ideologies since ancient times.  This cultural legacy/ heritage of India has led the whole world to follow the cult of non-violence preached by Buddha and Gandhi ji.

Dr. Marta Fulop, Head, Department of Social and Cultural Psychology, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary in her Key-note address urged that the scope of Gender-based studies in respect to competition cannot be restricted to cross-cultural, aspect rather as a universal phenomenon, trans-cultural research should be conducted transcending borders. She based her talk on “Being a woman and competitive in different parts of the world”

The Chief Guest Dr. Karen Kingsbury, Professor, International Studies, Chatham University, USA elaborated upon the role of transcultural writers, who, through their literary adaptations, are cutting across boundaries.  She illustrated that literary creations are always replete- with symbols which represent cultural nuances, hence trans-cultural creators are making meaningful contribution towards promoting better comprehension of the world. The Guest of Honour, Dr. R.K. Mahajan, Dean Academics, GNDU lauded the role of KMV in motivating youth to equip themselves with global competence.  The conference souvenir was also released to mark this occasion. The plenary session-I was chaired by Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi, the college Principal during which Dr. Karen Kingsbury and Prof. John Battaglino from USA delivered their talks respectively.

The proceedings of the second day of the international conference on Cross Cultural Nuances were flagged off with a plenary sessions. The Plenary Speaker Dr. Janos Gordon Gyori, Associate Professor, Centre for Intercultural Psychology and Education, Eotvos Lorand University, Hungary gave his discourse on “Developmental Programms for Gifted Students”; examples from the International Landscape with their cultural background.  

The invited talk delivered by Dr. P.C. Sondhi, Vice President of World Federation of Sporting Goods, M.D. of F.C. Sondhi and Co.  Pvt. Ltd.  was based on Cross- Cultural Phenomenon and he also shared his experiences of his stay in Britain.  Dr. G.S. Shergill from Massey University, New Zealand, in his discourse, shed light on Cultural Assimilation: Study based on New Zealand and Chinese- New Zealand Parents Perception of Teen’s influences on Family Purchase Decisions.

Dr. Gurupdesh Singh Professor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, in his talk on “Interdiscursivity and Cultural Formations”, said that every cultural institution, practice or formation is specific to its time. The plenary sessions were followed by seven parallel technical sessions in which a large number of paper presenters presented their papers.  Dr. Labh Singh Kheeva (Principal, University Constituent College, Pbi. University, Bathinda) and Dr. Harsh Verma (NIT, Jalandhar) also acted as chairperson.

In the valedictory function, Kumar Amit, ADC Jalandhar was the Chief Guest, who in his valedictory speech congratulated the members of KMV family for organizing the international conference.  She Amit said that India is a culturally rich country and the youth should be proud of it.  The organizing Secretary of ICCN-14 Dr. Jatinder presented a detailed report of the proceedings of the conference apprising the audience about 260 research papers which were read out in the technical sessions as well as through video conferencing.  

 Alok Sondhi, General Secretary, KMV Managing Committee extended a formal vote of thanks to the distinguished scholars, researchers, scientists, media wizards and delegates from 22 states of India and 10 countries from across the globe who have converged on one platform to delve into intricacies and complexities of cross cultural phenomenon. During the conference, the proceedings witnessed 260 research papers presentations.

The presiding dignitary, Dr. Sharanjit Singh Registrar, GNDU, Amritsar congratulated the staff and students for organizing the International Conference as such conferences are a way of transmitting knowledge from one culture to another.  Participation of 900 KMV students as delegates was applauded by Dr. Singh.
