Jalandhar, October 20, 2023:  Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) organized a National Level Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights. The  event was organized by KMV IPR Cell, in collaboration with the Institutions Innovation Council (IIC). The primary goal of this workshop was to raise awareness about Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Patents, with an emphasis on fostering academic and industrial research perspectives.

Dr. T. Pavan Kumar, a Senior Scientist specializing in Chemistry and serving as the IPR Ethics Officer and Secretary of the Standing Ethics Committee SEC, as well as the Coordinator for MAITRI Faculty at CSIR(IMMT), Bhubaneshwar, was the featured resource person for the event. In his presentation, Dr. Kumar initiated the discussion by delving into the realms of creativity and innovation. He educated the students about the distinction between discovery and innovation, using various illustrative examples. He commenced with an introductory overview of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and then proceeded to provide detailed insights into each of its distinct categories.

Dr. Kumar went on to explore the various facets of IPR, commencing with Patents, which offer exclusive rights to inventors, preventing others from producing, using, selling, or importing their inventions for a predetermined duration. He also elaborated on Copyrights, which bestow exclusive rights upon authors, artists, and other creators, safeguarding their original works such as books, music, films, and software. Furthermore, he delved into Trademarks, elucidating how they provide exclusive rights to businesses, preserving their brand names, logos, and other symbols that serve as identifiers for their products or services. The presentation also touched upon Trade secrets, which encompass confidential information such as formulas, techniques, or processes, offering businesses a competitive edge and legal protection.

Dr. Kumar shed light on the significance of Industrial design rights, emphasizing how these rights are invaluable in safeguarding the visual design of industrial objects such as products, packaging, or containers. Additionally, he explained the concept of Geographical indications and their role in identifying products originating from specific geographical locations, which possess distinctive qualities, reputation, or other characteristics linked to their place of origin, with examples like Darjeeling tea and Hyderabadi biryani.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Kumar underscored the pivotal importance of intellectual property rights, highlighting how they serve as a wellspring of inspiration for innovators and contribute to economic progress and advancement. He emphasized how these rights protect consumers from subpar or counterfeit products and foster equitable competition in the marketplace. Moreover, he emphasized the "Research to Reality" (R2R) concept, motivating students to transform their ideas into tangible innovations. The workshop provided an engaging and thought-provoking experience for all participants.

Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi thanked the resource person and lauded the endeavor taken by the organizers for organizing such meaningful activities and averred that it should be a regular feature in the curriculum.
