KMV organises Open House on ‘Readdressing Women’s Safety: Manipur Mayhem’ 

Jalandhar, August 9, 2023: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya’s Women Studies Centre organized an Open House on a pertinent issue-Readdressing Women’s Safety: Manipur Mayhem’ chaired by Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi,  Principal and Director, Women Studies Centre. The motive behind this interactive session was to provide students with a platform to share their opinions, thoughts and experiences. The recent case of violence against women in Manipur has been a harrowing reminder of the barbarism that still lingers on in our society and the insecure environment for women throughout the country. Every woman in the country today feels ashamed and anguished over this horrific Incident where one community’s revenge against the other was taken by disrobing and dishonoring women. Nearly 20 students presented their views. Harroop presented her self-composed poem in a shattering voice on Manipur Mayhem:  

    “In Manipur’s case, a tale of sorrow unfolds
    A haunting assault, where a tragedy beholds
    A land of beauty, grace and ancient pride
    Now married by darkness where justice is denied…….”

In this interactive open house, students raised many relevant questions such as “Are women safe in India?”  Why are conflicts fought over women's bodies? Why is our legal system so slow? Why are rapists moving freely? Where are women’s rights? All these questions are testimony to the fact that safety mechanisms need to be readdressed. Students also discussed issues that create hindrances in the progress and development of women and their professional success.

Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi acknowledged and valued the views expressed by KMVites on this grave issue. She averred that the social and cultural norms that are putting women at risk must be drastically changed. Women should be bold and strong; both professionally, physically and psychologically to get social justice. Vehemently condemning the incident, Dr Atima Sharma Dwivedi made students aware of some important historical facts about Manipur and neighbouring states.She stressed upon the importance of education, self-reliance and economic independence of women for their self-esteem, respect and strength in society. Vigorous actions should be taken to awaken the consciousness of the tribal community towards honour and respect for women. Collective efforts should be done to make places safer for women to realize their true potential.  Samriti (B.A. Sem 3), Bhumika (B.B.A. Sem 3), Muskan (B.A. Sem 3), Muskan (B.Sc. Hons Maths Sem 5),  Kritika (B.Com Hons. Sem 3), Anushaka (B.A. Sem 3) Harroop (10+2) Komalpreet (10+2)  have been selected Gender Champions. Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi, lauded the efforts of Amarpreet Khurana, Coordinator, WSC  for organizing the session immaculately.

An ordinance was passed by all present to be sent as an appeal to the effective authorities of our country.
“Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous), the Heritage Institution vehemently condemns the horrific incident that happened in Manipur which shattered and shamed the entire nation. We, KMVites, extend our heartfelt support and solidarity to the people of Manipur. We firmly stand against any form of violence, abuse and dishonor directed towards women.  The authorities should take swift and decisive action against all those culprits involved in this heinous crime. Severe punishment should be meted out to all perpetrators.  The government should prioritize the safety and well-being of women. Vigorous efforts should be taken to awaken the consciousness of tribal communities to prevent atrocities on women in future. Together we must strive to build a society where women are respected, given social justice  and treated with dignity and treated with dignity and honor.”
