KMV students showcase creative recycling skills during unique exhibition

Jalandhar, September 29, 2024: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) organised a unique exhibition featuring the innovative projects that illustrated the students' commitment to sustainability by transforming waste materials into both functional and decorative items in connection with “Swachhata hi Seva 2024 Campaign. 

Gautam Jain, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar was the chief guest for the occasion. This visit was an opportunity for Jain to engage directly with the bright students from the Postgraduate Department of Fashion Designing and the Postgraduate Department of Fine Arts. The exhibition presented an impressive collection of products crafted from discarded materials, underscoring the students' dedication to environmental consciousness and sustainable practices. Among the standout items were exquisitely designed platters, which were not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical for various occasions such as anniversaries, ring ceremonies, and the traditional celebration of Karva Chauth. These platters made by students of B.Sc. & B.Voc. Fashion Designing semester 5th, were ingeniously constructed from waste cardboard, demonstrating the students' resourcefulness. They were further embellished with an array of junk materials, including delicate laces, reflective mirrors, and traditional clay pots, showcasing the students' remarkable ability to repurpose items that would otherwise contribute to environmental waste. Beyond the platters, the exhibition featured a rich tapestry of artistic creations that captivated the audience. Glass bottles, often seen as mere refuse, were transformed into stunning decorative pieces that added a touch of elegance to any setting. The students also displayed intricate sceneries crafted from pebbles and cardboard, showcasing their artistic vision and attention to detail. Additionally, the craftsmanship of the students shone through in unique items made from recycled bangles, as well as stylish bags fashioned from denim scraps, further emphasising their innovative approach to design. In a series of vibrant wall hangings that combined various materials, including fabric scraps and natural elements, to create visually striking pieces that told stories of nature and culture. Each artwork was a testament to the students' ability to blend traditional techniques with contemporary design, reflecting their deep understanding of both art and environmental stewardship. Department of fashion designing also showcased the videos of Sukriti Fashion Show which served as a platform for promoting zero waste practices and modular garments. Faculty members also played a crucial role in guiding the students, providing mentorship that encouraged experimentation and exploration of new ideas. Mr. Jain commended the students for their innovative approaches and encouraged them to continue pushing boundaries, reminding them that their creativity could inspire change not only within their local communities but also on a global scale. In his remarks, Jain expressed his admiration for KMV as a nurturing ground for future leaders in the fields of fashion and fine arts. He also emphasised upon the role of education in fostering creativity and innovation, and urged the students to remain committed to their ideals of sustainability and social responsibility. His visit concluded with a sense of optimism, as he left the institution inspired by the potential of the young artists and designers he had met, confident that they would make meaningful contributions to society in the years to come. 

Principal Prof. Dr. Atima Sharma Dwivedi averred that the projects showcased, crafted from waste materials, are a testament to our students’ ingenuity, environmental awareness, and commitment to sustainability as through this exhibition, our students have demonstrated how waste can be transformed into something meaningful and beautiful. She further maintained that the range of ideas—from functional household items to artistic creations reflect the students’ ability to think critically and apply their knowledge to real-world problems. These projects exemplify how education at KMV goes beyond the classroom, empowering students to become responsible citizens and change-makers for a sustainable future. Students namely Laxmi, Sangita, Tamana, Tarandeep Kaur, Simranjit kaur, Harshita, Yogita, Nandini sharma, Arpita, Rupinder Kaur, Vanshita, Nandini Sanger, Harmanpreet Kaur, Anuradha, Pragati, Lavanya, Nidhi, Sneha Yadav, Anjali, Priyanka, Muskan, Chandrika, Navneet Kaur, Kanchan, Simranjit kaur, Palak, Harmanpreet Kaur, Inderpreet Kaur were appreciated by all for their innovative creations during the exhibition. 

Principal lauded the efforts of Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Head P. G. Department of Fashion Designing, Dr. Madhumeet, Head, PG Department of English and Yogeshwar Hans for successfully organising the event. Health Officers Dr. Abrol and Monica Sekri were also present on the occasion.
