Ludhiana, March 5, 2013: Knitwear Club, Ludhiana office – bearers in a joint statement here on Tuesday, have said that they are delighted that the knitwear /textile sector’s long pending demand of withdrawal of duty free import on Bangladesh has been fulfilled.

“We welcome the decision of the Finance Minister to review the treaty signed by Central Government to allow Bangladesh duty free import on 47 apparel items and we are obliged with his decision to rollback this treaty”, they said.

They added Knitwear Club had made representations to the Centre at various forums to reconsider this treaty as it will strike the roots of the Indian economy and  their prospects in national and international market. India will stand nowhere in competition at global level.

They extended their thanks to P. Chidambaram, Finance Minister  and Manish Tewari, Minister for information and Broadcasting who considered their requests and immediately realised the negative implications of the treaty and accepted their  proposal.

Further, they said in the Union  Budget P. Chidambaram  has imposed 12 percent Countervailing Duty plus Education Cess (3 percent of CVD) on garments imported from Bangladesh, it will definitely boost the Knitwear / Textile industry .

The signatories to the statement included chairman Vinod Thapar, president Darshan Dawar, general secretary Narinder Miglani, treasurer Harish Kairpal, senior vice president Rajinder Bhushan Maini, and senior vice president Jaswant Takkar.
