Knowing early warning signs of stroke can save life, permanent disability: expert
There is also a lack of awareness about stroke, its early detection and treatment
Chandigarh: “Stroke has become the 4th leading cause of death in India. The sudden death of some brain cells due to lack of oxygen may lead to lifetime disability.
Dr. Ajay Panwar, stroke and interventional neurologist at Amcare Super Speciality Hospital, Zirakpur informed on Thursday that risk factors for stroke-like hypertension, elevated lipids, diabetes, and few lifestyle factors are similar to those for cardiovascular diseases which itself is the leading cause of death.
The faster the stroke is treated, the better are the chances of recovery. If one rushes to the comprehensive stroke center soon after stroke onset, his or her lifelong disability or death can be prevented, he pointed out.
Dr. Panwar said further that delay of every minute in stroke treatment results in the death of approximately 2-million neurons. Within 6-hr of a stroke occurrence, the permanent damage and disability can be prevented. Therefore, the patient should be immediately rushed to a hospital that has all stroke treatment facilities under one roof, he asserted.
There is also a lack of awareness about stroke, its early detection & treatment, he said.
Even if the symptoms vanish quickly, getting timely help is still important as these can be brief episodes of transient ischemic attacks (TIA) or “mini-strokes, he informed.
Simple lifestyle changes like eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking, and keeping your diabetes and blood pressure under control can help prevent a stroke, opined Dr. Panwar.
