Knowns and unknowns of derivatives

Chandigarh, February 6, 2025: Skill Enhancement Course on “Masterclass on Financial Derivatives” concluded with a valedictory ceremony at the Centre for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (CSDE), Panjab University.

The hands-on course provided management students with the skills to equip the participants with comprehensive knowledge of derivatives and their application to understand investment and hedging strategies better.

The Chief Guest, Manish Bansal, CEO of Wealth Verse Capital Services Limited, Chandigarh, also an alumnus of Panjab University, informed that the derivative market is more than ten times larger than the global economy. This is because derivatives are available on almost every investment asset, including stocks, commodities, bonds, and currencies. He emphasized that informed investors put a part of their wealth in equities stocks and the remainder in derivatives. The former provides consistent capital growth, whilst the latter is ideal for hedging or short-term capital appreciation.

Bansal reiterated that derivatives professionals dealt daily with combinations of knowns and unknowns. He concluded by lauding the efforts of Panjab University in nurturing the youth through skilling added to their current pursuit of a degree.

While providing feedback, the participating students shared that the knowledge and skills acquired during the course taught them the nuances of these complex financial instruments. Mastering derivatives is important for management students, especially those looking to build careers in capital markets. The Valedictory Ceremony concluded with the awarding of certificates to successful students.
