LAUREL: Punjabi University wins overall Rowing Championship

Chandigarh, 26 December, 2012: Punjabi University Patiala has won the All India Inter University Rowing Championship, concluded today here at Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh.

Adaish Partap Singh Kairon , Minister for Food and Civil Supply, Food Processing, Information and Technology of Punjab was the Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion Kairon said that the Sukhna Lake has been established as a world level tourism destination and has also earned a great name as a rowing centre.

Kairon has also given away the prizes to the winners. The closing ceremony was presided over by Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University Patiala Dr. Jaspal Singh.      The championship was conducted under the chairmanship of Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, Director Sports with a grand success. In men section Punjabi University team has won the first position by securing 18 points, while Punjab University Chandigarh remains at second place with 7 points and Kurukshetra University got 6 points, grabs the third spot. Besides that in women section, Kerala University has won first position by 18 points, followed by Punjabi University with 9 points and Madras University has achieved the third place with 6 points.

Punjabi University has won the overall Championship with total 27 points, whereas Kerala University was the second Runners-up with 18 points and Punjab University Chandigarh got third position with 7 points.

On this occasion AIU Observer Dr. KA Tarzan, National Hockey player Kamal Cheema, National Rower Gurpreet Kaur, Assistant Directors Dr. Gurdeep Kaur and Moninderpal Kaur, General Secretary of Punjab Rowing Association S. Jaspreet Singh Sidhu, Boota Singh Kaleka, Coach Dalbir Singh, Harpreetinder Singh, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Dal Singh Brar and Harjinder Singh Jinda and especially Dr. R. B. Bamba Former Vice Chancellor of Punjab University Chandigarh were also present on the occasion.
