Chandigarh, May 28, 2022: A new-age leadless pacemaker was implanted successfully in a 74 year old morbidly obese patient at Ojas Hospital, Panchkula recently. The patient was suffering from transient loss of consciousness (syncope) due to intermittent high grade electrical heart block.
The pacemaker was placed directly inside the patient's heart without surgery via the femoral vein, said Dr. Anurag Sharma, chairman of interventional cardiology who along with Dr Munish Dev, associate consultant interventional cardiology carried out the both procedures.
Talking to media during a press conference here Saturday, Dr. Anurag said that another very challenging case was of an 81 years old patient who had a low pulse rate of 35 beats per minute. The patient was facing heart failure along with complications of breathlessness, fatigue and two valves leakage.
The patient was also suffering from atrial fibrillation which makes the patient prone to suffer brain stroke. He had to be on lifelong anticoagulants, drugs required for thinning the blood.
He was operated while he was on blood thinners and anticoagulants, said Dr Anurag.
Dr Munish Dev informed that in comparison to a conventional pacemaker, in leadless pacemaker there is no incision scar on the chest, no connector wires or lead, and no restrictions on any daily activities. The conventional pacemaker weighs about 30 to 40 gms whereas the leadless pacemaker weighs only 2gms with 8cc volume, he said.
