The Department of History, in collaboration with the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology, hosted an engaging lecture titled “Daughter of the Earth: Agnes Smedley’s Tryst with India”.
Chandigarh, October 16, 2024: The Department of History, in collaboration with the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology, hosted an engaging lecture titled “Daughter of the Earth: Agnes Smedley’s Tryst with India”.
The Sri Aurobindo Chair at Panjab University Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty delivered the lecture at the Seminar Room of the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology.
In his insightful lecture, Prof. Mohanty examined various aspects of gender issues, the life struggles of Agnes Smedley, and the support she received from her mother. He highlighted Smedley's significant role in Chinese history during her association with Mao Tse-Tung in the 1950s.
Following the lecture, an engaging question-and-answer session allowed attendees to explore the complexities of the topic and engage in scholarly discourse. The discussion addressed contemporary issues such as marital rape, domestic violence, women’s safety, and other forms of exploitation.
Earlier, the event began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Saundarya Kumar Deepak, setting the stage for an intellectually stimulating discussion. Prof. Paru Bal Sidhu, Chairperson of the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology, honored the guest with a plant as a token of gratitude. Dr. Jasbir Singh, Chairperson of the Department of History, then extended a formal welcome and introduced the distinguished guest. On conclusion of the lecture, Prof. Anju Suri expressed gratitude on behalf of both the Departments.
The event saw an impressive turnout, with over 90 students and faculty members in attendance.
